Maria Saleh Mahameed: Peace of Mind

Recipient of the Rappaport Prize for a Promising Artist, 2023

Maria Saleh Mahameed (b. 1990, Umm al-Fahm; lives and works in Ein Mahel) presents a body of work created during the months of war.

The monumental charcoal drawings on swaths of cloth were made in her signature practice, working directly on the floor, imprinting her body's traces onto them. Her works are filled with drama and mystery, drawing inspiration from sources that range from ancient history to the contemporary moment; from prehistoric cave paintings to artists such as Edvard Munch, Ana Mendieta, and William Kentridge.
